Older ladies are still interested in fashion you know!

On my many journeys with my clients we often receive less than perfect service. I wonder what it must be like shopping for clothes if you don't have a companion with you. I'm all about empowerment of older people and those with disabilities so that they can make their own choices and be out in the world and I get disappointed when shop staff ignore the person with the walker or in the wheelchair and talk to me!

Recently I took a client to a branch of Caroline Eve in Christchurch as she wanted to update her wardrobe. The service was terrific with the salesperson working hard to get the correct colours, patterns and sizes. It made me reflect on the bad experiences which, sadly, are more common.

I'd like people to appreciate that even though a woman is older she still cares about her clothes and appearance. Retirement Villages are full of style queens who love any opportunity to dress up, including shoes and accessories. Businesses are missing out on a market that must be worth a lot of dollars by not catering for older clients. It's not hard; patient, knowledgeable staff, a chair to rest on, larger size dressing rooms that can fit the shopper and their helper. Shops in malls are usually very accessible by having lifts and automatic doors so that's a large part of the shopping battle sorted.

Style is ageless.
